Former Aston Villa, West Ham and Germany international midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger has announced in an interview with German magazine Die Ziet that he is gay. He becomes first former Premier League footballer to come out as gay.
Hitzlsperger says: “I’m coming out about my homosexuality because I want to move the discussion about homosexuality among professional sportspeople forwards”
The 31-year-old, who ended his playing career in September due to persistent injuries, said he has only realised ?in the past few years? that he would ?prefer to live together with another man.?
Former German foreign minister Guido Westerwelle, who is openly gay, and former German football federation president Theo Zwanziger both praised Hitzlsperger for his “courage” in coming out.
