Carla Antonelli Is The First Transsexual To hold A Seat In Madrid Assembly

Famous in Spain as an actress Carla Antonelli took up her seat in the Madrid regional assembly. She has become the first transsexual to hold a seat in a regional parliament in Spain. She was also the first person in Spain to ask for a change of name and sex on her DNI identity document.

Typically Spanish has the story

She was number 18 on the Madrid Socialists? list of candidates and has been a member of PSOE for a number of years. She was a prominent LGBT rights activist for many years and even threatened to go on hunger strike when she was campaigning for the Gender Identity Law which was approved in 2007. She told P?blico that her achievement on Tuesday is the result of the long struggle by thousands of transsexuals.

?We have achieved unthinkable goals and raising up the microphone today and saying, Yes, I swear, is the materialisation of what was much more than a utopia in the 1970s?, she said.

Antonelli said in a press release the day before she was sworn in as a regional MP that it would be ?a historic moment?. ?I have reached this point, and it hasn?t been easy, and I want to show that transsexuals can and should be in all places and spheres of work?.
