Madonna, Macklemore, Ryan Lewis, Mary Lambert and Queen Latifah married 33 diverse couples — some gay, some straight — late Sunday night on live television during the 56th annual Grammy Awards on CBS. The couples exchange marriage vows while Macklemore & Ryan Lewis were performing their gay-rights anthem ?Same Love? alongside Madonna’s “Open Your Heart.” The group wedding ceremony was met with a standing ovation by the Grammy crowd, and even tears from some of the artists.

Queen Latifah was certified by the state of California to perform the mass wedding ceremony.

“It is my distinct honor to now ask our participants to exchange rings,” Latifah said from the stage. “Do you each declare that you take each other as spouses?” she asked. As the couples, some gay and some straight, said their “I do”, she said, “I now pronounce you a married couple.”
