Daniel Hernandez applied pressure to Rep. Giffords’ wound to help stop blood loss and was with her on the ride to the hospital.

Daniel explains with details how he was able to help Rep. Giffords:

I heard the gun shots and I knew that people had been injured most likely, so I ran towards where the congresswoman was. When I got there I saw that there were people who had been injured then I try to see who had a pulse, to see if there were people still breathing, I was only able to check two or three people before I noticed that congresswoman Giffords has been injured severely, so she became my first priority, not because of her position but also because of the severity of her wounds.
