Two Immokalee Men Attacked In Possible Hate Crime

Two men were attacked in Immokalee by a gang of five men last week because they were gay.

ABC7 has the story:

Two Immokalee men say they were attacked because they’re gay. Collier County deputies are investigating the attack as a possible hate crime.

One man said he was beaten so severely, he had to go the hospital and now he’s afraid to leave his house.

“My mother’s even scared for me to walk out of the door,” said one victim, who didn’t want to be identified. “My right eye, it was swollen shut. I couldn’t see out of it for a couple days and my mouth, I had a real nasty busted lip.”

The 25-year-old says he was attacked by a group of men as he walked down the street with his openly gay friend, Cirildo Soliz. That’s when he said the men began shouting gay slurs.

If the words weren’t enough, what happened next is why deputies are calling the attack a possible hate crime.
