Barracuda, the ground-breaking club that set a new standard for gay nightlife, will celebrate two triumphant decades with a massive anniversary celebration on Sunday, October 18. Some of the world?s most innovative drag queens ? who became superstars on the Barracuda stage – are scheduled to perform.? Among them, Candis Cayne, Sherry Vine, Jackie Beat, Shasta Cola and Shequida. Additional stars are to be announced soon.?? Barracuda?s 20th Anniversary Celebration takes place on Sunday, October 18th from 7pm to 12am at 275 W 22nd St.
Barracuda opened in October, 1995 by best friends Bob Pontarelli and the late Stephen Heighton, the same team behind the legendary Crowbar on Avenue B; Elmo Restaurant in Chelsea; the leading gay bar in Hell?s Kitchen today, Industry; and Leshko’s, the former East Village staple landmark.
Barracuda was a bar of “firsts.” Prior to Barracuda, gay bars were, for the most part, somewhat serious affair meant for cruising and drinking.? The bar shattered that mold by introducing avant-grade couch-style seating and lounging, innovative and sweeping nightly entertainment and an ever-present irony in its brand. Along with its?? nightly drag events and outrageous celebrity bookings (Tonya Harding and Tammy Faye Baker, among them) introduced a new trend of entertainment to gay bars around the world. ?Prior to Barracuda, gay bar entertainment was relegated to random strippers and porn stars.
With its downtown, edgy sensibility, and humor, Barracuda proved unique to the burgeoning neighborhood and helped launch Chelsea as an internationally recognized gay-borhood.
Barracuda remains an iconic city destination today and has become the most honored bar in New York City, named Best Bar by New York Magazine, NY Press and HX Magazine.? It has been featured in The New York Times and the New York Daily News and is regularly cited in Page Six and in New York Magazine?s Daily Intelligencer column.
