Jack Mackenroth is one of the most prominent gay figures in America,? He’s a sports champion, a successful fashion designer, a TV personality, a renowned fitness model, an HIV/AIDS activist and an inspirational figure for today?s youth.
Jack Mackenroth is originally from Seattle, Washington, where he lived with his mother, brother and sister. He graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a double degree in Fine Arts and Sociology, and in 1991 moved to New York City to attend the prestigious Parsons School of Design where he studied Fashion Design. Before appearing on Season 4 of ?Project Runway,? Jack was the Design Director at Weatherproof Activewear for four years after 17 years in the fashion industry.
Jack has dressed celebrities such as Heather Tom from the ?Bold and the Beautiful,? Tiki Barber from the ?Today? show and Candis Cayne (well-known for her role on ?Dirty Sexy Money?).
As a fitness and fashion model through the 1990s, Jack appeared in numerous magazines, such as Paper, DNR, Men?s Fitness, Men?s Journal, Genre, Blue, Envy and several others. Since the airing of ?Project Runway,? he has graced the covers of reFRESH, POZ, HIVplus, HX, Instinct, Lavender, Gloss and David magazines. Additionally, Jack?s fashion illustrations have been featured in DNR, Paper, Nylon, Elle, as well as in ad campaigns for Tommy Hilfiger and Sushi Clothing.
Beyond his professional achievements Jack has also achieved national recognition as a competitive swimmer. He has 3 All-American titles to his name and set a national record in the summer of 2006 in the breaststroke leg of the 4 x 50 meter medley relay. The same summer he finished 12th in the 50 meter breaststroke at the Masters World Championships in Stanford California. He still competes at the most elite level in swimming.
Jack has always been very open about his positive HIV status. Since his diagnosis in 1990 he has tried to combat the stigma of HIV by living honestly and being a role model through professional and athletic achievements. He believes that public visibility educates and eventually saves lives. He has worked with HIV/AIDS charities such as God’s Love We Deliver and Project Open Hand, which deliver meals to homebound people with AIDS. Each year his swim team organizes a benefit event that raises over $25,000 annually for local AIDS charities. He hopes to further disprove the myths about HIV throughout his experience on Project Runway and beyond.
Most recently, Jack launched a national HIV/AIDS education campaign, in partnership with Merck & Co. Inc., called Living Positive By Design, which aims to combat the stigma associated with the disease. With the campaign, he has been touring the country encouraging people with HIV to have a positive outlook while still effectively managing their disease. Jack also serves as a commentator for the LOGO network at seasonal New York Fashion Week events. He attends top shows, interviews A-list celebrities and models, and dishes about it all on the NewNowNext! blog. Jack recently launched his 2012 “Calendar for the Cure,’ featuring sexy images of him, with 100% of profits going to (www.amfar.org). He was also just featured in DNA Australia as one of their sexiest men alive, along with Ryan Reynolds and Ricky Martin. He is also one of the final four of National Lampoon’s Twitter Awards as “Best Gay”.
