Fashion Designer, Author and AIDS Activist Jack Mackenroth to Attend 25th Annual AIDS Walk Philly
Philly Calendar Press Release
For over two decades, Jack Mackenroth, prized fashion designer and the first openly HIV-positive TV personality since Pedro Zamora, has dedicated himself to HIV/AIDS awareness. For the third consecutive year, he will be appearing at the AIDS Walk Philly, where he will be participating in the walk, as well as greeting walkers and signing autographs.
In 2008, Mackenroth ignited the global discourse of the HIV/AIDS pandemic when he became the first-ever TV personality to be open about his HIV-positive status since Zamora, who passed away from the disease in 1994. Ever since his appearance on Project Runway’s fourth season, his popularity has soared and his visibility as an HIV/AIDS awareness activist and educator has thrust him into the international spotlight.
Mackenroth, who has been HIV-positive for 22 years, believes that visibility and honesty are the keys to fighting the stigma of HIV. He started a national HIV education campaign over three years ago, after becoming a fan favorite on Project Runway, and he continues to speak at HIV/AIDS events, and at colleges and high schools around the country, sharing his story of living with HIV. He just released his 2012 “Calendar for the Cure,” with all proceeds from the sale of the calendar going to amfAR, to help find a cure for HIV.
He is also currently writing a hilarious tell-all memoir, entitled Making Lemonaids, which will be out next year. Most recently, he was voted one of DNA Magazine’s “Sexiest Men Alive,” along with celebrities such as Ryan Reynolds and Ricky Martin. As the only out HIV-positive member of the select group, he continues to serve as a role model in the HIV community by speaking openly about his status.
Mackenroth also has a special affinity for the city of Philadelphia, as he co-hosts a weekly radio show with Philly native, Robert Breining, called POZ I AM, and has had the privilege of interviewing Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter on multiple occasions.
The walk and run will begin at 8 a.m. EST on the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art (26th St and Benjamin Franklin Pkwy).
