“East Side Pride” kicks off Vancouver’s 2015 Pride Season

In the glow of Friday’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling that the right to same-sex marriage is guaranteed by the Constitution, the LGBT community in Vancouver kicked off the 37th Annual Vancouver Pride Season at the “East Side Pride” Event.

Rainbow flags were in full force on Saturday June 27, at at Grandview Park on Commercial Drive for a celebration of diversity and inclusivity. This year’s theme is “Gender Super Heroes” People who inspire the new generations to come out and be Proud.

Hundreds gathered to enjoy performances by some of the East Side’s top drag performers, DJs and live bands. The “East Side Pride” was hosted by the recent winner of the Mr/Mrs Cobalt Drag Competition, Rose Butch. The B.C. Rainbow Alliance for the Deaf had a sign language interpreter in front of the stage during the event.

Many community groups and services attended including; HIM, Out on Screen, Vancouver Coastal Health LGBTQ2+ services, Qmunity, the Vancouver Latin LGBT Community, Gender Fest, the Dyke March, the Catherine White Holman Wellness Centre, Queer Arts Festival, Queer Film Festival, and Man up.

The attendees had the chance to participate in a pie eating contest and to play with a rainbow colours Parachute and a Giant Jenga. There were three raffle giveaways, each prize included: a gift bag of premium goods from Topdrawers Apparel, Little Sisters Book & Art Emporium and Winners. The Grand Prize Draw also included a Neon Duchess Wig from Boo La La Costumes.

The “East Side Pride” is organized by the The Vancouver Pride Society, a non-profit organization that brings together members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual,Transgender, Two-Sprited and Queer (LGBTTQ) community, their friends, allies and supporters.

The VPS is also the organizing body behind the annual Vancouver Pride Parade which will take place August 2. The Parade Committee has selected Roan Reimer, Michelle Fortin, and Romi Chandra Herbert to be this year’s Pride Grand Marshals. More than 650,000 people are expected to turn out for the parade.
