Scissor Sisters’ new album, Magic Hour, is out now on Casablanca Records. Recorded in New York and London, the album features collaborations with Azealia Banks, Diplo, Calvin Harris, Stuart Price, Alex Rihda and Pharrell Williams. Magic Hour is the follow up to 2010’s Night Work, which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Independent Albums Chart.
The album opens with the classic Scissors-at-Studio-54 strut of “Baby Come Home.” “It’s about that really yearning feeling, when you’re in bed alone,” explains frontmanJake Shears. “It’s a love song.” The video for “Baby Come Home” is up now on Vevo.
Other album highlights include first single, “Only The Horses,” a full-on hands-in-the-air rave-pop banger, “Shady Love,” an exuberant rap-pop number featuring guest vocals by Harlem-based rapper/singer Azealia Banks, “Inevitable,” which bears the gossamer-light touch of co-writer Pharrell Williams and the anthemic techno ballad “The Year Of Living Dangerously.”
It’s a diverse collection of songs – and the legions of Scissor Sisters fans are a diverse lot as well. Bono has called the band “the best pop group in the world” and Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme is equally smitten with them, as evidenced by the new, tongue-in-cheek infomercial he shot for Magic Hour:
On June 15, Scissor Sisters will kick off a North American tour at the Las Vegas House of Blues. The outing will include a show at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles (June 16) and conclude with a two-night stand at New York City’s Terminal 5 (July 6 and 7). Ticket available at http://www.scissorsisters.com/events.
“The smiles, showmanship, disco-era revivalism and finely calibrated ironies are the essence of Scissor Sisters, a New York City band that keeps people dancing to its in-jokes,” said The New York Times’ Jon Pareles in a review of one of the group’s sold-out 2010 shows at Terminal 5. The New York Post praised the band’s “powerhouse set,” observing: “The colorful, burlesque-inspired show combined fashion, frantic dance moves and falsetto vocal harmonies that would have made the Bee Gees jealous. The Scissor Sisters also projected a B-52′s-like knack for call-and-response party anthems.”
Scissor Sisters – comprising Jake Shears (vocals), Ana Matronic (vocals), Babydaddy (guitar/bass/keyboards) and Del Marquis (guitar) – have sold over seven million albums. Magic Hour is the band’s fourth album and follows Night Work, which contained the dancefloor smashes “Any Which Way” and “Fire With Fire,” Ta-Dah (2006) and Scissor Sisters’ self-titled debut album, which was the top-selling album of 2004 in the UK.
