Celebrating the recent designation of the historic Stonewall National Monument in Greenwich Village, an online fundraising campaigncentering on a celebrity auction commenced on October 25 and will run for two weeks. View the auction here: http://charitybuzz.com/stonewall

Cher, Madonna, Stevie Nicks, Neil Patrick Harris, Andy Cohen, George Clooney and Taylor Swift are among the many stars who have donated items to the auction, which will raise funds to help maintain the Stonewall National Monument—the new unit of the National Park System that encompasses Christopher Park ( the oval public space bordered by Christopher Street, Grove Street and West 4th Street and situated directly across from the Stonewall Inn), the Stonewall Inn itself, and the surrounding streets and sidewalks that were the sight of the momentous 1969 Stonewall Uprising.

The Stonewall Uprising inspired the modern LGBT civil rights movement and the continuing fight for LGBT rights. It took place on June 28, 1969, when police conducted what began as another routine raid of the gay nightclub.  But the frustration felt by bar patrons and nearby residents over continual harassment and arrests culminated in their refusal to comply with police orders, sparking several days of riots and protests.  Within two years of the riot, every major city in America was represented by gay rights groups.

On June 28 2016, President Obama declared the area around the Stonewall to be the first national monument to LGBT rights. “I’m designating the Stonewall National Monument as the newest addition to America’s National Park System,” President Obama said. “Stonewall will be our first national monument to tell the story of the struggle for LGBT rights. I believe our national parks should reflect the full story of our country, the richness and diversity and uniquely American spirit that has always defined us. That we are stronger together. That out of many, we are one.”

The campaign is a function of Pride Live Nation, a social awareness and advocacy organization supporting the LGBT community founded by Diana Rodriguez, who previously worked with the Clinton Foundation and the United Nations. The National Parks Service, in partnership with online auctioneer Charity Buzz and online fundraising platform Prizeo, is running the auction, with all proceeds going to the National Parks Service and earmarked for maintenance of Stonewall National Monument.

For the auction, Madonna has donated a pair of autographed shoes. Stevie Nicks has contributed an autographed tambourine that she played on stage, signed “Love to You Stonewall ’69,” and Cher has provided a Philip Treacy hat she has worn. Other luminaries who have given personal items for auction include Anderson Cooper, Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, Michael Buble and Troye Sivan.
