John Cameron Mitchell will write and star in a sequel to his hit rock musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch, according to journalist Kevin Sessums. Hedwig composer and lyricist Stephen Trask will also write the music for the new sequel. A reading of the new production is scheduled for September 16 at the Afterglow Festival in Provincetown, Massachusetts. No further casting has been announced.
Hedwig and the Angry Inch is the story of a transgendered punk rock singer from East Berlin who, while touring America with her band, the Angry Inch, shares her life story with the audience. Hedwig opened at off-Broadway’s Jane Street Theatre on February 14, 1998 with Mitchell as Hedwig and Broadway alum Miriam Shor as bandmate and husband Yitzhak. The show played 857 performances before closing April 9, 2000. In 2010, Mitchell announced he would reprise his performance in Hedwig on Broadway, but the revival never came to fruition.
